Supplements: Before Surgery
Before and after surgery, supplements are an essential component to achieve and maintain a healthy mind and body
Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD)
Prior to having surgery, you will be placed on a very low calorie diet (VLCD) typically for 2-6 weeks, to reduce the amount of visceral fat around your abdomen and liver. Although there are many meal replacement diets available on the market, we recommend Optifast, which continues to have the best nutrient profile.
Optifast can be purchased from certain pharmacies, including Chemist Warehouse.
Or you can order some of the Optifast range online through Amazon, following the links below:

Supplements: After Surgery
Protein Water & Tasteless Protein
After surgery it can be difficult to maintain an adequate protein intake, especially during the first 1-2 months. Therefore we recommend a protein supplement to help ensure you are getting at least 60g of protein per day.
Tasteless protein and protein water are popular ways to increase your protein intake. These can be purchased at our Cairns office, or online at www.costpricesupplements.com.au.

Other Protein Supplements
My Protein website offers a large range of protein supplements, including whey protein, collagen protein, protein bars, and protein snacks. Their website can be accessed here.
Multivitamins
After surgery multivitamins should be taken twice daily for the first 12 months, and once daily ongoing after that.
There are several multivitamin brands specifically designed for those that have had bariatric surgery, including BN, NutriChew, and Fit For Me. All of these are suitable to take either in capsule form or chewable form once home from surgery (note that Fit For Me multivitamins are taken only once per day).
The following over-the-counter multivitamins are also suitable:
Centrum for Men or Women
Centrum 50+ for Men or Women
Centrum Advance
Blackmores for Women (not Blackmores for Men)
