Can anyone have bariatric surgery if they want to?
The criteria below must be met to be eligible for bariatric surgery:
Either a BMI of 40 or more or
A BMI between 35 and 39.9 plus one or more chronic health conditions* or
A BMI between 30 and 34.9 plus a serious chronic health condition (e.g. Type2 Diabetes)
* Chronic health conditions include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, fatty liver, & gout.

How much does surgery cost?

Is this surgery covered by my private health insurance?
This will depend on the level of cover you have, and how long you have had your insurance (usually 12 months is required). To find out wither you are eligible, simply phone your insurance company and ask whether you are covered by quoting the required item number:

How long does it take to recover from surgery?
You will be able to return to light duties at work and light exercise as soon as soon as you feel able. We generally recommend 1-2 weeks off work. Heavy lifting of more than 10kg must be avoided for the first 4 weeks, while swimming should be avoided for the first 2 weeks following surgery
Will I need to take time off work after surgery?
We generally recommend taking one to two weeks off work following surgery
Do you offer a GP service?
Yes. Gardens Medical currently has a GP service operating Wednesdays from 9am-12pm. Bookings however are essential.
